Troy Deeney makes bold Leicester City decision with Steve Cooper sack verdict
After Saturday’s comeback win at Southampton, Troy Deeney names one Leicester City player and manager Steve Cooper in his Premier League team of the week
Leicester City’s top talent are getting the recognition they deserve after making at back-to-back Premier League wins with victory at Southampton at this weekend.
The Foxes refused to let the international break impede their positive turn of late, even at 2-0 down to the Saints. There was a mountain to climb in the second half at St. Mary’s and ultimately the team managed to handle that challenge with seconds to spare.
Before Jamie Vardy levelled from the spot as Ryan Fraser saw red for the hosts, then finally Jordan Ayew netted in the eighth minute of stoppage time, it was loanee Facundo Buonanotte who tucked in the goal on 64 minutes that set Leicester on their way. And so, that is why the Argentine has earned himself a pick in Troy Deeney’s BBC Sport team of the week.
The former Watford striker explained: “His side struggled in the first half at Southampton but Buonanotte stood out for his bravery. He gave the Foxes a much-needed spark and belief throughout and was pivotal in turning the game around.”
With the third-most touches of the ball between those in blue, seven tackles, five shots, five crosses, four dribbles and three key passes made on top of his strike, it is no surprise the 19-year-old is commended in such a way. But still, this is going against the grain as most pundits have been raving about the contributions of substitute team-mate Abdul Fatawu in the match’s aftermath.
The Ghanaian’s introduction in the 59th minute was a key turning point with Southampton simply unable to contain his speed. It was his run and cutback from the byline that teed up Buonanotte, he struck the crossbar from distance in the build-up to Vardy winning his spot-kick, then lastly left the ball to Ayew to hit the winner.
“Cooper made changes at half-time, like he did at Arsenal, and in a few other games, and his team brought themselves back into it. It was a massive performance from his side in the second half to come from 2-0 down to win; a monstrous task that they took on with broad shoulders. Simply excellent.”
