Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer send Wolves clear message about Gary O’Neil after Man City defeat
Wolves were unable to secure a result against Manchester City as a late winner was awarded at Molineux.
Just as the Old Gold thought they’d earned a point against the champions, John Stones’ late goal was awarded by VAR.
Chris Kavanagh had ruled the goal out for offside due to the positioning of Bernardo Silva however, Stuart Attwell advised the decision to be reviewed, seeing Wolves suffer a late defeat.
As a result of the 2-1 loss, Gary O’Neil’s losing streak continues, as Wolves have not picked up a point in their previous five Premier League matches.

The defeat against City was a difficult one to take, not just due to the nature of the winning goal, but due to the level of performance that Wolves displayed.
The hosts didn’t deserve to lose the game but the reality is that there’s little to show from the hard work once more, piling the pressure on O’Neil.
A lot of discussion came from the result, as Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer analysed the game on The Rest Is Football podcast.

Moving away from the subject of VAR’s role in Stones’ winner, the duo made their thoughts on O’Neil’s role as manager clear, assessing the Old Gold’s start to the season.
“They have played all the big boys, haven’t they? Their starting fixtures were really tough. I think they will be okay. I mean, not everybody does,” Lineker said.
“I hope they stick with him [Gary O’Neil],” Shearer replied, as Lineker agreed with his stance on O’Neil.
“So do I. I think he deserves it. I think he has really got something as a coach.”
Some will agree with the two pundits, and some will disagree however, it’s impossible to argue that improvement was seen against City, which could, in turn, buy the manager time to turn things around.
O’Neil can’t afford to extend winless streak
Wolves haven’t won in the Premier League since April in the latter stages of the 2023/24 campaign.
The doubts over O’Neil have surfaced as a result, with concerns over the manager’s position stemming from last season into the current calendar.

Wolves last won back-to-back games in the top flight in February, beating Tottenham away from home and then beating Sheffield United at Molineux.
It’s been a tough time for O’Neil and his squad however, what is clear is that a run like the one the club are currently on cannot extend much further, with a relegation battle a possibility if form continues.
