Will Tyler Glasnow need offseason elbow surgery?

Dodgers News: Tyler Glasnow Reveals If He Will Need Surgery This Offseason

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow is confident that he will not need surgery during the offseason, per Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Glasnow had not had another scan done on his injured elbow as of the beginning of this month, but believes he will not need surgery for it.

Glasnow was ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 regular season and postseason because of his elbow injury. When Glasnow was originally placed on the injured list on Aug. 16 because of elbow tendinitis, the team had optimism that he could return by the end of the season and for the postseason. Nearly two months later, Glasnow hasn’t even begun throwing yet.

Rather than undergo surgery, Glasnow said on Sep. 20 that he instead plans to take a look at changes he can make mechanically to ideally reduce elbow injuries down the road. One area he talked about was his lengthy extension, which adds a lot of stress to his arm and elbow.

Injuries have continually derailed Glasnow’s career, even long before he was traded to the Dodgers last December. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021, causing him to miss nearly the entire 2022 season, as well. Glasnow has also dealt with other injuries, including to his shoulder and oblique.

Even with the season-ending injury, Glasnow did manage to put in a career year in his first season with the Dodgers. The 30-year-old started a career-high 22 games and recorded a career-high 168 strikeouts. The Dodgers named him their Opening Day starter, and Glasnow made his first MLB All-Star Game.

With Glasnow out, along with injuries to starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Gavin Stone, the Dodgers have used only three starters this postseason — Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Jack Flaherty, and Walker Buehler.
