Newcastle United training ground update after ‘great player’ ruled out for seven months
Miley broke into the Magpies’ first-team last season as a 17-year-old and went on to appear 26 times in all competitions, with his goal in the 3-0 victory over Fulham last December making him the club’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer.
However, the midfielder’s breakthrough campaign came to a premature end in March when he sustained a back injury. Miley was then on track to return for the beginning of pre-season but fractured his metatarsal.
Fast forward to October and Miley has stepped up his recovery having trained during the international break, however Eddie Howe is still leaning on the side of caution.
Speaking ahead of today’s clash at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, Howe explained: “Another player that has been back during the international break and looked really good. It looks like he’s not been away, which is probably expected with Lewis – he’s that kind of lad, very consistent, it’s just been great to see.
“He’s a great player, we’re delighted to get him back but again I’ve got to manage his re-introduction in the right way.”
The 18-year-old faces added competition from previous with Joelinton and Joe Willock returning from injury, and Sandro Tonali back from his 10-month suspension. But Howe believes that is a good thing.
“I think he is is coming back into a great environment,” Howe added. “I think coming back from the injuries he’s had and he’s had a couple of injuries now, that’s the best place for him to be rather than going ‘he has to play’ and he has to play when he’s probably not ready to play.
“That’s probably the reason he got the injuries that he suffered because we had to push him too hard because we had no alternative players to use during a really condensed period of football.
“Learning the lessons from that will be really important and reintroducing him at the right time. He will have some outstanding players to compete against which will only help him learn and develop anyway.
“Hopefully we can keep the majority of our strength in midfield.”
On 30 June 2024, Yankuba Minteh was sold to Brighton by Newcastle United.
Statements released (see below) by the two clubs the following day, confirming the transfer.
As usual, the transfer fee wasn’t made public, though widely reported as having been agreed at £33m plus potential future add-ons.
Newcastle United selling two promising young players simply due to the PSR position the club found themselves in, with £50m+ needed to immediately improve that PSR position before 30 June 2024, for the latest three year PSR accounting period deadline.
