Josh Magennis gets his deserved goal and shows his worth

It has been quite the week for Josh Magennis.

It has been quite the week for Josh Magennis. On Tuesday night the 34-year-old celebrated his 81 st cap for Northern Ireland with his 12 th goal – the fifth in a 5-0 win over Bulgaria.

Then on Thursday night, the experienced forward came off the bench to score his first goal for exeter -city-fc>Exeter City as he helped the Grecians go six unbeaten in a 2-0 win away to Shrewsbury Town.

Kamari Doyle had put City ahead in the ninth minute in front of the Sky TV cameras, but Gary Caldwell’s men were not at their best in the first half. But that all changed after the break when Magennis was introduced with a much more composed second half.

Fellow half-time sub Jack Aitchison set up the striker to poke home his first goal since his summer move from Wigan Athletic as he tapped into an empty net from close range. The victory took City up to fourth in the League One table and was a club record equalling sixth successive clean sheet.

“We’re just taking each game as it comes and tonight was similar,” Magennis said, “I think Shrewsbury were a hard team but we always back ourselves.”

“It’s not just about your technical ability, it has to be about your mindset and who you are as a person.

“We’ve got no bad eggs, no egos. We are all in it together. You can see that with the boys coming off at half-time, fresh legs at half-time. We’ve got something good going here but football can change so we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground and keep moving.

“We did unbelievable to take the lead but we took a step back, no disrespect to Shrewsbury but we had enough quality to go and dominate the game. But we managed to stay in the lead, defended as a unit, we are good at keeping clean sheets, and got that second goal.
