EFL Championship: Coventry City's Ben Sheaf Replacement | by Junescout | Medium‘Approaches were made’ – Key Coventry City player opens up on summer transfer interest

Coventry City midfielder Ben Sheaf has confirmed he attracted interest in the summer but had no issue staying focused on the Sky Blues.

Coventry City have found themselves losing key players in recent years, especially in 2023 when Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokores left the club.

However, it was the reverse this year. Callum O’Hare moved to Sheffield United, becoming teammates with Hamer once again, but other than that, Mark Robins only really added to his squad.

One man who was heavily linked with a move away was captain Ben Sheaf.

The midfielder is among the Championship’s best in his position and unsurprisingly, that has not gone unnoticed. However, he has remained with Coventry City as they look to fight it out with the Championship’s best.

Now, Sheaf has opened up on the summer interest in his services, admitting that there were sides keen but with Coventry City keen to keep him, he had no issue focusing on the task at hand.

As quoted by Coventry Live, he said:

“Yeah, there was stuff in it [the reports of interest], for sure, but ultimately I am a Coventry player.

“Cov wanted me to stay so I am contracted here and once that window was closed that was it. I had to knuckle down and my full focus is on Coventry.

“Yeah, approaches were made by a few clubs but, yeah, that’s done now and there’s nothing I can do about that.

“All my full focus is now literally getting promoted with this club. I have a lot of love for this club and I want to take them to the Premier League, and that’s what I am going to try to do.”

Premier League admirers

While Coventry City man Sheaf gave no mention of those who were keen, there were regular links with him and a move to the Premier League.

It was claimed that Ipswich Town were sizing up a move upon their rise from the Championship. Fulham were also said to be admirers as they looked to replace Joao Palhinha, who had been signed by Bayern Munich.

Sheaf ultimately stayed put though, much to the delight of his club and adoring supporters.

Underwhelming start

Many expect Coventry City to be challenging for promotion this season. After retaining the likes of Haji Wright, Milan van Ewijk and Sheaf, as well as spending nearly a good amount, a lot was expected of Robins’ side.
