Wrexham contract already done! Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney one step ahead of free agency fears as services of in-form Red Dragons star retained
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Red Dragons have seen Ryan Barnett in fine form this season, with the 25-year-old recently involved in four goals during a 4-1 victory over Northampton. Alongside the assists that he has been teeing up, Barnett has registered two goals of his own in the 2024-25 campaign.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
There had been suggestions that his contract – which was signed when joining from Solihull Moors in February 2023 – was set to expire in 2025. With that in mind, there were calls for Reynolds and McElhenney to make the funds available for an extension.
DID YOU KNOW?
It is now being claimed that a clause was triggered towards the end of the 2023-24 campaign, as the Red Dragons secured promotion out of League Two. Journalist Rich Fay has posted on social media: “Good news Wrexham fans, I’ve been told Ryan Barnett had an automatic extension clause in his contract that was triggered towards the end of last season, meaning he is actually tied down until June 2026. A great bit of business by the club that looks better by the week.”
Talks may be held at some stage regarding a long-term extension to Barnett’s contract, but he is going nowhere any time soon. For now his full focus is locked on helping Wrexham to sustain another promotion push in League One, with Phil Parkinson’s side sat second in the table through 10 matches.
