New York Red Bulls attempting to keep Tom Edwards, but Stoke still beckons - Once A Metro

Stoke City cut ties with Tom Edwards at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract.

Stoke City decided against keeping hold of the full-back and he officially became a free agent in late June. He subsequently weighed up his options.

Edwards, 25, rose up through the academy ranks at the Bet365 Stadium and up until this past summer he had never played for another club on a permanent basis. He progressed up through the various different youth levels of the Championship side.

Salford City swooped to land him on a free transfer in mid-July and he dropped into League Two. He penned a two-year deal with the Ammies under former MK Dons and Charlton Athletic manager Karl Robinson.

How is he faring?

Edwards has made seven appearances for his new team so far in this campaign, four of which have come in the league.

He has been getting regular game time at the Peninsula Stadium which is what he will have wanted.

The right-back said after signing for Salford City, as per their website: “I want to be very successful as an individual, but also as a team. I know how much ambition this club has and I want to move forward whilst I am here.

“I am honestly delighted to sign; I couldn’t wait to do it, and I am so happy I have come up as you obviously get a feel for the environment and I am loving my time here already, so I cannot wait to get going with the boys.”

Salford City have been stagnant in the fourth tier over recent times and will hope to get promoted to League One this term. However, they are sat in 15th place.

Edwards played 51 games for Stoke City’s first-team but his last appearance for them came in 2020.

He had loan spells away from Staffordshire at Fleetwood Town, New York Red Bulls, Barnsley and Huddersfield Town to get some experience.
