‘I think he will go’ – Leeds United fringe player tipped for January transfer window exit

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt has been tipped to depart Elland Road on loan in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old has seen his stock plummet in recent years, having once looked to be Leeds’ most promising young talent

He has found minutes extremely limited since the arrival of Daniel Farke as Whites boss and was afforded just two league starts last season.

Many fans expected him to move on in the summer, but an exit failed to materialise despite links with West Bromwich Albion, Celtic, Rangers and Plymouth Argyle.

He said: “I definitely think he is going to be up for grabs. When you are at a club the size of Leeds, it’s a bit similar to the Man United situation, it’s not always easy to move players on because they feel they can do something and things to offer.

“Gelhardt is still pretty young, I think maybe a loan for him because he’s still got a lot of time on his deal. I think he will go, but a loan is more likely at this point.”

Leeds loaned Gelhardt out to Sunderland in January 2023, when he was struggling for Premier League minutes under Jesse Marsch.

An injury to Black Cats marksman Ross Stewart pushed Gelhardt into a traditional number nine role and he did not light up the Championship in the way Leeds fans hoped he would. He did, however, help Sunderland reach the play-offs and weigh in with three goals.
