Talanoa Hufanga was still getting used to being back on the field before he suffered another injury.

The San Francisco 49ers safety tore ligaments in his wrist during the first half of the Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said the former All-Pro will miss significant time.

“It will be at least a month, probably longer,” Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday.

Shanahan said Hufanga could be placed on injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least four games.

The wrist issue continues a run of injuries for Hufanga. The former Crescent Valley High School star had missed training camp and the first two games of the regular season while recovering from a torn ACL during Week 11 of the 2023 season.

He returned to make his 2024 debut in Week 3 and made it through the 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams injury-free. Then he rolled his ankle during practice during the week and missed the team’s 30-13 Week 4 win against the New England Patriots. He was on the field for 20 snaps against the Cardinals and now he’s out at least a monh.

If the 49ers keep Hufanga on the active roster, he might miss just three games. The 49ers will face Seattle on Sunday before taking on Kansas City and Dallas in Weeks 6 and 7, respectively. They have a bye week for Week 8, which might be enough time for Hufanga’s injury to heal.
