Kalvin Phillips shares the truth on what really happened regarding infamous spat with West Ham fan
West Ham United’s loan signing of Kalvin Phillips last season ended up being a disastrous move for all parties concerned.
Kalvin Phillips joined West Ham on loan in the January transfer window – a move that was widely praised at the time.
However, things didn’t work out for Phillips or the Hammers, with the 28-year-old playing just 320 minutes in total for us.
The main problem with Phillips was that he looked like he wasn’t bothered, and his effort levels were severely lacking.
One talkSPORT pundit even suggested that he should personally refund the Hammers after ‘sabotaging’ our season.
Phillips was a signing that David Moyes pushed for. Tim Steidten was said to be very much against the deal (The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas).
And the German ended up being proven right.
Things went from bad to worse for Phillips at West Ham as the weeks rolled on. He was filmed flipping the middle finger at a West Ham fan who criticised him for his shocking performance away at Newcastle back in March.
And now the midfielder has lifted the lid on what happened at St James Park during that incident.

The 28-year-old has now joined Ipswich Town on loan from Man City.
And Phillips will have to face the Hammers fans at the London Stadium tomorrow.
Ahead of the game, Phillips has opened up about the incident when he responded angrily to a Hammers fan who was criticising him after our 4-3 defeat to Newcastle.
The midfielder was speaking on My Mate’s A Footballer podcast, and responded when asked about his reaction to the West Ham supporter.
He said, “Nowadays in football, you can’t really do much, especially with so much media attention as well. It was a three-second clip and I didn’t even know he was videoing it at the time as well.”
I’m sorry, but that’s no excuse as far as I’m concerned.
Just because he didn’t know he was being filmed, that doesn’t justify his actions.
I actually felt sorry for Phillips before he did that. He had barely played during the 12 months leading up to his loan move to West Ham, and he quite clearly wasn’t fit.
It was a terrible signing from Moyes in the first place. We desperately needed a left winger and a striker at the time, but Moyes opted to bring in a central midfielder instead – a position where we were stacked.
Still, his performances for the Hammers were disgraceful.
Kalvin Phillips will never be appreciated at West Ham, and tomorrow he will play the part of the pantomime villain.
