CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Carolina Panthers raised eyebrows across the NFL on Monday when they announce that they benched 2023 first overall pick Bryce Young for veteran Andy Dalton.
The former Alabama star looked like he had the potential to be a high-end NFL quarterback. But he has not played well since coming into the NFL, throwing just 11 touchdowns in 18 games.
Two games into his second season, he did not throw a TD and had three interceptions.
Given the massive haul the Panthers gave to move up to No. 1 to get Young, this may be one of the biggest mistakes a franchise has made in recent NFL history, and Young looks like one of the biggest draft busts of all time.
It hasn’t helped that No. 2 pick C.J. Stroud looks like a superstar in the making.
On the surface, Young looks like the biggest bust since JaMarcus Russell, and there is a strong case to be made there.
Young had two games with more than one touchdown pass in 18 starts and he only once threw for 300 yards in a game. In addition, he did not win a game where his team scored multiple touchdowns.
The worst part is he has looked worse to start the season, particularly in Week 1 in which he completed just 43.3% of his passes with two interceptions and a 32.8 QB rating vs. the Saints.
In fairness to Young, a quarterback does need the help of those around him, and the Panthers have done a poor job of adding talent. They have been possibly the worst drafting team in the NFL since 2021, with Jaycee Horn and Chuba Hubbard easily looking like the two best players they’ve picked.
No matter how good a quarterback is, they need help around him.
Young just hasn’t had that. He’s had chaos and a lack of talent around him instead.
That said, he obviously has not played well enough and has not progressed much at all since coming into the NFL.
When you also consider the haul that the Panthers gave up in the trade, which not only included the first pick in 2024 but Carolina’s second-round pick in 2025, it’s hard to not consider Young the biggest bust in almost two decades.
