Leeds United’s Championship rivals Stoke City have sacked head coach Steven Schumacher – just five matches into the 2024/25 season. His departure comes following the Potters’ 1-0 loss at newly-promoted Oxford United, a result which left Stoke 13th in the table after two wins and three defeats from their opening five matches.

The loss at the Kassam Stadium was their third of the campaign so far, having also been beaten by Watford and West Bromwich Albion. Schumacher joined Stoke from Plymouth in December 2023, replacing Alex Neil in the managerial hotseat. He subsequently steered the team to safety with a 17th-placed finish last season.

Stoke sporting director Jon Walters said: “My role as sporting director is to make tough decisions that serve the long-term interests of Stoke City.

“We have a young, dynamic squad that is eager to develop and a clear vision of how to achieve success, and we hope to announce a new appointment shortly. We will need the fans, staff, and players united in support to achieve our goals.

“As always in football, these decisions are difficult, and we wish Steven and his staff all the best for the future.”

Schumacher becomes the Championship’s second managerial casualty. Preston North End parted company with Ryan Lowe following their opening-day loss to Sheffield United.

Former Crewe Alexandra boss Alex Morris and former captain Ryan Shawcross, who now works as the Potters’ under-21s coach, have been placed in caretaker charge of the team, who face League Two outfit Fleetwood in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Stoke City sack Steven Schumacher

Although Football League World pundit Palmer admits a move to North London would entice Harry Gray in the future, he believes the opportunity to play regularly at Elland Road will see him remain a Leeds player.

As quoted by Football League World (16 September) he said: “They’re keeping tabs on his younger brother Archie Gray, with the Premier League side hoping to reunite the 15-year-old with his brother.

“It’s one hell of a gamble for such a young player, but the 15-year-old has already accelerated through the ranks, making his debut for the U18’s when he was still 14, scoring in a 4-3 defeat to Sunderland last October.

“Unfortunately, he’s picked up an injury, so his season hasn’t kicked off yet. Obviously, with his brother down there, it would entice Harry to want to go there to a big club.
