Matt LaFleur Sings the Praises For Malik Willis After Win Against the Indianapolis Colts but the Head Coach at stake of loosing his job
The Green Bay Packers learned a lot about themselves in Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts. Green Bay got off to a fast start against Indianapolis, and they won the game 16-10.
Head coach Matt LaFleur was preparing all week to start with Malik Willis at quarterback because of the injury to Jordan Love. Willis started a game in the second week of the 2024 NFL season and played with the Tennessee Titans a season ago.
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Praises Malik Willis After the Win
Green Bay decided to run the football often against the Indianapolis Colts defense. The Houston Texans gashed Indianapolis in Week 1 on the ground and it worked out to the Packers’ benefit. Despite running often, Malik Willis completed 12-of-14 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 41 yards on six carries.
Malik Willis threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks in the first quarter. Matt LaFleur told Matt Schneidman of The Athletic after the game about Malik Willis:
“I don’t think you guys can appreciate or even comprehend the task that Malik Willis — I mean, this guy got here three weeks ago and for him to be able to go out there and command our offense, we had a lot of long calls. We had shifts, motions, a ton of different run schemes. There was a lot put on his plate and for him to be able to go out there and do what he did today, I think that speaks volumes of who he is as a person and the work that he’s put in. Just super proud of him.”
Willis was not asked to do much through the air, but he did something that was accomplished on Sunday: not turn the football over. Malik Willis will just need to be a game manager until Jordan Love returns.
The biggest storyline for Week 3 is Malik Willis facing the Tennessee Titans. With the Green Bay Packers 1-1 and Tennessee 0-2, the Titans are in a must-win game. Willis played for the Titans for the two years in his NFL career.
This will be a big week for him. It would be something if led the Packers to another win next week against his former team. Green Bay will need to be able to run the football again against the Tennessee Titans. Head coach Matt LaFleur will prepare for them to be successful next week as well.
