Leeds United news: Mateo Joseph on being happy he did not go out on loan - BBC SportMateo Joseph slammed for ‘stinking’ Leeds United moment v Burnley

BBC commentator Scott Read was astonished by a “stinking” moment from Mateo Joseph as Leeds United faced Burnley on Saturday (14 September).

The 20-year-old striker had the chance to open the scoring at Elland Road after just 50 seconds, dispossessing Maxime Esteve on the halfway line with just James Trafford to beat.

One-on-one with the Clarets goalkeeper, Joseph was unable to keep his composure and fired wide of the far post, thwarting his chance to give the Whites an early lead and score his second goal of the season.

Speaking live via BBC Radio Lancashire (14 September, 12:35pm), Read said: “A terrible mistake at the back and a huge get out of jail free card for Burnley.

“In theory, they should be 1-0 down. But it’s a stinking finish from Mateo Joseph.”

Mateo Joseph misses chance to open scoring in Leeds United v Burnley

The 20-year-old striker is still learning in front of goal, but he should still be bulging the back of the net.

His miss in the first minute could be hugely important in the match, especially with Luca Koleosho taking advantage of a mistake from Manor Solomon and smashing past Illan Meslier.

With Patrick Bamford still unavailable for Daniel Farke, having been missing from the matchday squad to face Burnley once again, Joseph has become the manager’s main man.

That has been a brilliant decision so far, with the Spaniard notching two assists against Sheffield Wednesday before scoring the opener in the 2-0 win over Hull City.

Despite this, Joseph is likely to make several mistakes throughout the season due to his age and lack of experience, and he cannot be blamed for that.

There were plenty of fans calling for the youngster to take Bamford’s spot in the starting XI last season as the Whites looked to secure promotion to the Premier League, and that extra game time could have been vital.

In other Leeds United news, Daniel Farke will taste transfer regret as footage emerges of what Leeds target did yesterday.
