What Colombian media said about Wolves star Yerson Mosquera after Colombia’s 2-1 win vs Argentina

Wolves centre-back Yerson Mosquera started for Colombia in their shock victory over Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

In Colombia’s 1-1 draw against Peru on Saturday, Yerson Mosquera was an unused substitute but in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier, the Wolves defender played the full 90 minutes.

Mosquera didn’t take long to announce his name in lights, as he rose highest inside half an hour to power a header past Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

It’s been a great start to the campaign on a personal note for Mosquera, who returned from his successful loan at Villarreal to cement his place in Gary O’Neil’s back line.

The towering Colombian has started each of their three Premier League games, and although two have ended in defeat against Arsenal and Chelsea, the youngster can hold his head high.

Mosquera’s ferocious tackling ability and physical attributes have shined through and were also prevalent in Colombia’s famous win over the Argentines.

El Heraldo lauded Mosquera for his ‘great contribution’ after scoring the opening goal of the game, as they awarded him a 7/10 match rating.

‘“He started a little shy. He scored his head and took confidence. Great contribution.”

El Tiempo, on the other hand, felt that the Wolves defender understandably looked nervous at first against the World Cup winners but popped up when it mattered with a vital goal.

“It was the novelty in the defense, he was imprecise, insecure, suddenly he went to the rival area, beat them all from above and headed for the 1-0. But he kept his shortcomings. He hesitated and lost in the Argentine goal. Six points.”

Last night, Mosquera of course showcased his threat from set pieces but he was also instrumental in dealing with a quality front line of Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez.

Mosquera cleared the danger eight times while winning each of his aerial duels and ground duels as well as blocking one shot.

For the young defender, who was thrust into a difficult match, the Wolves star stood up to responsibility and showed why he’s so highly rated by O’Neil at Molineux.

Now, once he returns from international duty, Mosquera will hope to inspire Wolves to their first win of the season as they host Newcastle United on Sunday.
