Croatia's Euro 2024 squad: Kovacic, Modric and Perisic named, Caleta-Car misses out - The Athletic

Croatian forward considering joining Crystal Palace instead of Marc Guehi deal to be declined

Newcastle United may look to give up on signing England defender Marc Guehi after Crystal Palace played games with the negotiations this summer.

However The Daily Mail reports that Newcastle could still look to deal with the Eagles next year, but this time for one of their top midfielders.

Newcastle missed out on acquiring Adam Wharton from Blackburn Rovers with the England midfielder moving to Crystal Palace instead.

The 20-year-old had an impressive first season in the Premier League which led to him being called up for England by Gareth Southgate.

Now Newcastle may use the money they saved by not landing Marc Guehi to fund a move for Wharton who Crystal Palace value at £100 million.

It’s highly unlikely that Newcastle, or indeed Liverpool and Manchester City who are also keen on Wharton, would pay such an inordinate amount of money for the midfielder, but we’ve seen first-hand how stubborn Steve Parish can be.

The issue here is that the one position Newcastle have plenty of cover for is central midfield with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton the first-choice trio, Joe Willock just behind them, and then Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley as further backup.

As good as Wharton is, we don’t see him disrupting the top three order any time soon, but he could go alongside Joe Willock as a different option depending on the opposition.

Of course, if Newcastle were to lose someone from the midfield, then Wharton would no doubt be an excellent replacement, but again, would he get in the side ahead of Tonali, Bruno or Joey?

Having said that, if Eddie Howe abandons the 4-3-3 which is becoming slightly stale and predictable and starts going with four or five across the middle, then we could see a place for Wharton.

However, we just don’t see it happening, and definitely not if Palace are asking £100 million!

Eze is an absolute mastermind of a footballer and we often find ourselves talking up his talents as he amazes us and pundits alike.

Against Brentford, despite his goal being chalked off for offside, Eze scored a wondergoal of a freekick which may have changed the fortunes of Crystal Palace had it counted.

Now, weeks after that, a video has emerged from England’s training camp where Eze once again found the net from a free-kick, leaving Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon gobsmacked.

The free-kick was excellent and curled right off the post and into the corner, upon watching this happen right in front of his eyes, Gordon was in awe, simply replying: “Oh la la”.

To do something which leaves a player like Gordon in awe shows that Eze is quite an incredible talent, and reminds us that the Eagles are blessed to have him.
