Yankees Rivalry Roundup: Orioles suffer inexplicable home loss to White Sox
The Yankees stay a half game back thanks to a White Sox win (!)
After one of the season’s more debilitating losses on Tuesday, the Yankees lost a second against the middling Rangers, one that would have looked much worse save for Trent Grisham’s grand slam in the ninth inning. However, all things considered, everything else in the baseball world went about as well as the Bombers could have asked for, so let’s see what went down on a Wednesday full of action around the Bigs.4
Chicago White Sox (32-109) 8, Baltimore Orioles (81-60) 1
At every turn of Yankees low points in 2024, and there have been plenty, the Baltimore Orioles have been there to back them up. Despite two consecutive brutal losses in Texas, The Yankees remain just a half game out of the East, with the O’s dropping one to the historically bad White Sox — just as New York did in early August.
Both squads led off their first inning with home runs in this one. With Chicago’s coming from Nicky Lopez, his first in over a calendar year, and Baltimore’s off the bat of Gunnar Henderson, his 35th this season.
As shocking as this is to write, and as jarring as it may be to read, it was all Pale Hose from there. They added three more runs in the fourth thanks to a pair of homers from Andrew Vaughn and Dominic Fletcher. The suddenly-inspired ChiSox plated two more in the top of fifth thanks to a double from Luis Robert Jr. His night would only be so good, however, as he ultimately left with hamstring tightness.
Jonathan Cannon and the rest of the Chicago pitching staff was able to keep the potent Orioles lineup scoreless after Henderson’s leadoff homer, while their offense outhit Baltimore by more than double. The Yankees should be thanking the lowly Sox for keeping the Orioles down in their time of need.
