Hull City Close In On Former Premier League Midfielder

Hull City are reportedly on the verge of signing 25-year-old midfielder Steven Alzate following his departure from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer.

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Tigers have made significant progress in securing Alzate’s services. The player is said to have undergone a medical on Wednesday. The move could be finalised within 24 hours despite the transfer window closing last Friday, as Alzate is currently a free agent.

Alzate began his professional career at Leyton Orient, making his Football League debut in February 2017, where he scored his first senior goal shortly after. His performances caught the attention of Brighton & Hove Albion, who signed him in July 2017.

After a loan spell at Swindon Town in the 2018–19 season, Alzate returned to Brighton, making his debut for the Seagulls in the EFL Cup in August 2019. He went on to establish himself in the Premier League, with standout moments including scoring his first Premier League goal in a 1–0 win against Liverpool at Anfield in February 2021, Brighton’s first league win there since 1982.

Injuries affected his progress, but Alzate continued to contribute to the Seagulls’ success, including playing in Brighton’s 3–2 comeback victory over Manchester City in May 2021. He also netted a long-range goal in the EFL Cup in August 2022. Alzate spent the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons on loan at Standard Liège in Belgium, but after his Brighton contract expired in June, he became a free agent.

He also made his Colombia debut in November 2019 and earned praise for his performances in World Cup qualifiers.

Hull City, managed by Tim Walter, are keen to strengthen their midfield as they aim to push for promotion from the Championship this season. Alzate’s versatility and experience could prove valuable as the Tigers continue to build their squad. It’s been a tough start for the German manager, who sees his team enter the international break winless in the league, with three draws and a defeat from their opening four matches.

This could be a massive capture for Hull. They’re looking for talent that can help them go one better than their seventh-place finish last season, and Alzate ticks all the boxes. He’s played in England before, can settle quickly, but is young enough to develop and, maybe, even increase in value to sell at a later date.

Playing as a defensive midfielder, he would add real steel to their midfield, and his sharp eye for a pass could unlock the potential of players ahead of him. This is a transfer that is really easy to like, and it’s clear why Walter and Hull want to pursue it. If he does sign, expect him to be involved a week on Friday against Sheffield United.
