Football Manager predicts humiliating season for Gary O’Neil’s Wolves manager with Fans agitate for right choice
Gary O’Neil is set for a humiliating 2024/25 season at Wolves according to Football Manager 2024.
The new Premier League campaign is now underway after a long summer. So far this season, O’Neil has had a tough ride. The Old Gold have failed to win any of their first three league games which included a heavy 6-2 defeat to Chelsea at Molineux.
However, on transfer deadline day, Wolves managed to bring in multiple new faces which has renewed hopes that the club will return to form after the international break.
As a result, Molineux News has turned to the simulation game Football Manager 2024 to see what it predicts will happen to the Old Gold throughout the season. Unfortunately, the results do not bold too well for O’Neil.
Using a mod to update the squads, we simulated the entire 2024/25 campaign with the fully updated Old Gold team.
Over the past year, the Wolves manager has been widely praised for his work at Molineux. As a result, O’Neil was rewarded with a new four-year contract in the summer.
However, according to Football Manager 2024, Jeff Shi will live to regret this decision.
Throughout the 2024/25 campaign, O’Neil suffered numerous humiliating results, including a 0-0 draw away to National League side Ebbsfleet United in the FA Cup and a 3-0 defeat to Lincoln City in the proceeding round.
By the time February came around, O’Neil had only won six games in all competitions throughout the season, leaving Wolves in the relegation zone.
This resulted in the Wolves manager getting the sack and being replaced by former Leeds United manager Javi Garcia.
The Spaniard did well in his role and won four out of the eight remaining games. This resulted in a 14th-place finish, with the Old Gold comfortably surviving by the season’s end.
On the player front, Matheus Cunha continued his form from the last campaign as he found the net 11 times.
New signing Jorgen Strand Larsen flopped massively as he failed to find the net in any of his appearances. However, Brazilian international Andre performed well earning a 6.88 average rating.
However, the surprise package was no doubt Pablo Sarabia who netted eight times and collected seven assists as he went on to win Wolves’ Player of the Season Award.
While the prediction is no doubt a grim reading for many Wolves fans, it is not too far-fetched.
Wolves have struggled massively for some time now and have only won one Premier League game in their last 13.
Now that the international break is underway, O’Neil must do everything to ensure this is quickly rectified or the club faces another relegation battle.
The home fixture against Newcastle United next weekend will be a big indicator of how Wolves will fare over the next month. If the hosts suffer another big defeat, it could be a long season ahead.
