The midfielder featured for the Seagulls just a day after putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Amex Stadium following a Scottish transfer record move to the English Premier League side. O’Riley’s injury came just minutes into the Carabao Cup win over Crawley Town, with the minnows’ skipper Jay Williams crunching the Denmark international and saw him leave the ground on crutches.

And now Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler has confirmed he needs surgery. He said: “I can’t say how long he will be out but it’s serious injury as we expected.”

Crawley boss Scott Lindsey apologised for the tackle. He commented: “Maybe we were a bit aggressive, maybe the referee missed it (the challenge) and I would like to apologise. I wouldn’t want anyone to be hurt. We are both passionate about the game and we wish Brighton all the best in the next round.”
