Brad Treliving reveals he is not finished making moves before Leafs training camp.
The Toronto Maple Leafs started the 2024 off-season well, adding several veterans to their blue line and goaltending group, but with a lack of big changes up front, many fans are feeling unenthused about the change from the front office. While they did retain Max Domi, the Maple Leafs also lost Tyler Bertuzzi, and with Alex Nylander the only forward of note joining the team, the bottom-six of this forward group is underwhelming to say the least.
Thankfully for Maple Leafs fans, things aren’t set in stone yet, as GM Brad Treliving has revealed that with 4-5 weeks until training camp commences, the team are still looking at ways to significantly improve this talented roster.
«To me, we’ve still got five weeks or so till camp. And, you know, we’re not set yet. We continue to look at ways to make our team better. I said at the end of the year we’re going to look at everything. Sometimes people fall in love with ‘ ‘let’s make a big change just to
make a big change’. At the end of the day, you can go out and make big changes. If they’re not making your team better, to me it doesn’t make any sense to just make a change just to stand up and say ‘look at it, we made this big change ,
Given that Nick Robertson has reportedly asked for a trade, he makes perfect sense as a trade piece to improve this roster, with a proven veteran coming back to the bottom-six the perfect situation for Maple Leafs fans, despite the flashes of potential that he showed during the 2023/24 season.
Beyond that, there are several veterans weighing this group down in David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok and Ryan Reaves, and while none were mentioned by name, one has to assume that Treliving would love to move one of them at some point, even if it’s simply to get a look at the likes of Easton Cowan or Fraser Minten.
In past years, Treliving has done the majority of his work in the summer while making small changes at the deadline, and if that holds true, a big trade may be on the way as the Maple Leafs continue to search for the Stanley Cup Playoff success that has alluded them for so long.
