Stoke City ‘told to wait’ in crucial striker transfer pursuit amid Tom Cannon and Jay Stansfield updates.

Stoke City are determined to bring in a new centre-forward in the final 12 days of the summer transfer window.

Stoke City will have to be patient and wait on Leicester’s own striker pursuit if they want to bring in Tom Cannon before deadline day, they have been warned.

It has been barely a secret that Cannon, aged 21, has been high on Stoke’s transfer agenda this summer as they search for a new striker. He only started three league games as Leicester won promotion from the Championship last season but injuries to Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka plus a slow Premier League window have left him as new boss Steve Cooper’s only fit senior centre-forward ahead of their curtain raiser against Tottenham on Monday evening.

Championship rivals are also interested but The Sun’s Alan Nixon claims Stoke “are willing to pay almost all of the wages, which gives them the edge”, yet he warns: “The Foxes need to sign a couple of forwards first and are struggling to do deals. They have been quoted £10m for Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew.”

It was only in the last few days that Fulham manager Marco Silva has reiterated his stance on Jay Stansfield, who he says he will keep in his own squad this season after spending last year on loan at Birmingham.

But Nixon claims: “Stansfield could be available for £6m and his old boss, John Eustace, hopes to sign him for Blackburn. Eustace was his gaffer at Birmingham, who are also interested along with Stoke.”

Lewis Travis, who has been on Stoke’s radar this summer, is now being linked with a move to Hull with a reported price tag of about £3m. Stoke have brought Bosun Lawal and Andrew Moran into their midfield over the last week.
