Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace has said Dilan Markanday is in ‘talks’ with an unnamed club over a loan move.
Blackburn Rovers left the winger out of their squad for their Carabao Cup away trip to Stockport County last night. They didn’t need him in the end as they ran out 6-1 winners at Edgeley Park to comfortably book their place in round two.

Markanday, 22, has struggled to make a real impact at Ewood Park over recent seasons. He is under contract at Ewood Park until June 2025.

Amid interest from League One and League Two, Eustace has told the Lancashire Telegraph:“Dilan is away talking to another club at the moment to go on loan. I think it’s important that he gets a real run of games to keep his development going. Hopefully, we can see that get sorted. We could possibly see a few go on loan, yeah.”

Markanday needs to be playing regular football in his career at this point.

His chances of nailing down a place in Eustace’s starting XI are slim so a temporary departure would be beneficial to him.

It would give him a chance to play every week and show what he can do. His long-term future in Lancashire is up in the air and Rovers risk losing him for nothing in 12 months.

A loan could help him put himself in the shop window ahead of next year and boost his confidence.

Markanday rose up through the academy at Tottenham Hotspur and was a regular for the Premier League side at various different youth levels.

He played once for Spurs’ first-team before Blackburn Rovers came calling in 2021.

The Barnet-born man has since made 35 appearances in all competitions, 27 of which came in the last campaign, and has found the net on five occasions. He was also loaned out to Aberdeen a couple of years ago to get some experience.

What next for Blackburn Rovers?
The identity of the team who Markanday is in discussions with is yet to be known at this stage.

The fact he wasn’t in the squad for the game against Stockport County suggests negotiations are progressing though.

A change of scene will probably do him good and provide him with a platform to express himself.

Dilan Markanday is in talks to leave Blackburn Rovers on loan and therefore didn’t feature against Stockport County.

The 22-year-old was a surprise absentee from the matchday squad as Rovers put six goals past the Hatters in the Carabao Cup first round.

Markanday has struggled to nail down a regular first-term spot since moving to Rovers, instead featuring more from the bench and in cup games.

Eustace revealed the winger is in talks to go out for regular minutes this season. The club in question is unknown, at the time of writing, though there has been interest from clubs in League One and Two.

“We could possibly see a few go on loan, yeah.”

Jack Vale scored Rovers’ sixth from the bench. On the striker’s future, Eustace added: “Jack is someone who has taken his opportunity in pre-season, he’s scored a couple of great goals.

“It’s great he scored in a competitive game too. He’s a good player, he’s come through our system so we’ll see with Jack, his attitude has been fantastic.”

Arnor Sigurdsson is another player that has been linked away in the media this week. However, Eustace sees him as an important member of the squad and any exit wouldn’t happen until another signing was lined up.

“He played today, we have Ryan Hedges who played there on Friday and we don’t have many who can play on that side,” he said.

“It’s a position that is vital in the way we play. I thought Siggy did well today and it’s important he keeps going and we’ll wait and see.”
