The popular striker has swapped West Bromwich for Coventry ahead of the new season.

Brandon Thomas-Asante has spoken for the first time since joining Coventry City from West Bromwich Albion after turning down a switch to Hull City.

City thought they’d got their man after agreeing a fee in the region of £1.7m for Asante but an eleventh-hour change of direction saw the striker opt to join the Sky Blues and remain in the Midlands.

Last season’s Baggies top scorer, Asante netted 11 times at the Hawthorns but with a year left on his contract with Albion, decided to make the 28-mile journey to the CBS Arena.

“I want to give that excitement to the fans. Part of coming here was knowing there’s a squad who are really exciting and I hope to add to that and that’s something that I want to do,” the 25-year-old told the Sky Blues’ website.

“It holds a lot of prospects for an exciting chapter and an exciting new start to my career. Historically, there’s so much rich history that growing up I’ve been able to hear of and see at close hand being from not too far away and seeing what’s been done in recent times and knowing there’s so much success and so much potential of success to contribute to.

“There’s a definite very clear trajectory and I’m hoping that we can make things happen. The Premier League is where we want to go and seeing myself in this kit is a sign of positive things to come.

“I can’t wait, I’m counting down to that first ti

me to and meet all of the fans for the first time, to put on a show for them and show them the sign of things to come. I’ve been out there and seen the stadium with no one in there and I’m already excited, so to the stadium bouncing will mean everything to me and all of the boys. I can’t wait and I hope it’s one to remember.”

Coventry boss Mark Robins, meanwhile, hailed the arrival who will boost an already potent attacking unit in former City target Haji Wright and Ellis Simms.

“We’re excited to welcome Brandon to Coventry City,” said Robins.“He is a powerful and pacy striker who has goalscoring pedigree at this level plus a great attitude and work-rate. Brandon can play across the front line and will further strengthen our attacking options. We look forward to working with him at Coventry City.”
