Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is slowly winning back the trust and faith of fans after what’s been a very impressive summer transfer window so far.
There’s been positive changes both on and off the pitch this summer with reported improvements to certain facilities at the club, as well as nine new signings for manager Danny Rohl to work with.
In their last pre-season friendly on Friday, Sheffield Wednesday drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen, coming from two goals behind to end their pre-season tour of Austria and Germany on a high.
The 2024/25 Championship season is fast approaching. Sheffield Wednesday host Plymouth Argyle on August 11th in their first game of the new season, kick-starting what many expect to be a much better Championship campaign for the Owls.
But with their potential success next season may come one particular fear for Dejphon Chansiri.
Dejphon Chansiri will be wary of Danny Rohl interest after compensation changes
Last season and this summer, Rohl was attracting interest from a handful of Championship rivals.
Sunderland were interested in Rohl for a while. Hull City were also linked with Rohl, before Rohl signed a new three-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday earlier this summer.
But before Rohl signed his new deal, it was revealed that any club wanting to poach Rohl from S6 would need to pay £5million in compensation, or £10million to take Rohl and his backroom team at the time.
During Rohl’s contract talks with Chansiri, it was claimed that Rohl’s new contract would mean changes to Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday compensation, suggesting that the figure would be lowered.
Dejphon Chansiri must have back-up plan for Sheffield Wednesday
Should Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday perform well next season then we may see inevitable interest emerging in Rohl once again.
Should the Owls start well, then come the October break when the initial managerial sackings are often made, Rohl may become hot property.
Chansiri will surely have that in the back of his mind and so he needs to have some sort of back-up plan should a club pay Rohl out of his Sheffield Wednesday contract.
Although Rohl is committed to Sheffield Wednesday and to the long-term project that he’s under-taking, nothing is ever guaranteed, and Rohl may understandably have his head turned should a team with much more resources come calling.
For now though, Rohl will be focused on his side’s remaining pre-season friendly against Leganes next week.
