Chicago Bears, Caleb Williams

Chicago Bears fans should be amused by this analyst’s take on Caleb Williams.

NFL news is very slow this time of year. We hear ridiculous takes from all media sources, but more often than not, the national media outlets. On a recent episode of ‘Get Up’ on ESPN, Booger McFarland gave a hot take regarding the Chicago Bears and Caleb Williams.

Chicago Bears, Caleb Williams

Many analysts and fans were trying to make a bid deal because Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze had not signed their contracts yet. Well, both signed and reported to rookie camp on July 16 as expected. More news that was being overblown. Now, ESPN analyst and former NFL player, Booger McFarland decided to bring a hot take to a recent episode of Get Up that has many Chicago Bears fans up in arms.

Booger McFarland had the audacity to say that Caleb Williams will not only struggle, but he expects to have a similar conversation next year about how the Chicago Bears made the wrong decision when drafting Caleb Williams first overall.

Chicago Bears, Caleb Williams
That is a gutsy statement. However, that’s not all he said in this segment.Alright, there is a lot to unpackage here. Let’s first start with the fact that McFarland believes Caleb Williams is going to struggle. He’s right. Every rookie quarterback, even C.J. Stroud at times, struggles as they adjust to the NFL game. This means Jayden Daniels will also struggle this year. What we haven’t seen is either of these players in an NFL training camp situation. Neither of them has taken a snap. For McFarland to declare that Williams will struggle while trying to make it seem like Daniels is going to dominate is mindboggling.

This brings me to my next point though. We are likely seeing some LSU bias at play. McFarland played his college football at LSU, just as Daniels did during his breakout season. I just don’t see the hype though. I don’t see how Daniels is positioned to be better in his rookie season than Caleb Williams. Williams plays a more pro-style game while Daniels relies too much on his legs. Daniels is also very light for the NFL and could find himself being beaten to a pulp if the Washington offensive line doesn’t hold up.

Now let’s look at the Chicago Bears roster situation vs the Commanders
Washington has some solid players but nothing like the Bears’ lineup. At wide receiver, the Commanders have Terry McLaurin and Jahon Dotson. I’m sorry, but give me DJ Moore and Keenan Allen over either of them any day. Now throw in Rome Odunze over Luke McCaffrey while we are at it. Cole Kmet is a better tight end than Zach Ertz at this point in Ertz’s career as well. I’ll give the running back group to the Commanders since they now have Ekeler, but it’s not as far off as many Commanders fans may think.

Finally, comparing this situation to the quarterbacks drafted in 2023 is laughable. Bryce Young was never the consensus top quarterback in the draft class. Hell, I am on record of having Stroud over Young by a wide margin. Caleb Williams was the consensus number-one quarterback in the 2024 class outside of a few nut jobs who wanted to be contrarian. I’ll go on record right now that I guarantee, barring injury, that Williams will have a better career than a guy I didn’t even have as the second-best QB in the draft class.
