Steven Nzonzi meets Peter Coates after signing for Stoke City back in 2012. He went on to become a key figure for the side.

Stoke City favourite ‘in talks’ over ‘huge transfer coup’ to lower leagues.

Former Stoke City midfielder Steven Nzonzi is reportedly in talks over a move to newly-promoted French second tier club Red Star.

Red Star, based in the northern suburbs of Paris, are planning for life back in Ligue 2 after winning the Championnat National title last season under the charge of former Newcastle United defender Habib Beye. Beye has since left to be replaced by Gregory Poirier.

Nzonzi would be a much-celebrated arrival as a 2018 World Cup winner and he is available on a free transfer after leaving Turkish side Konyaspor.

Le Parisien report: “This would be a huge coup of Ligue 2 and Red Star. The promoted team’s transfer window has been rather innocuous until now with only two recruits (Samuel Renel and Bradley Danger) but it could take on a whole new dimension with the arrival of a French world champion. If nothing has been finalised yet, the interest is very real between the two parties.”

Red Star play about 25 minutes away from where Nzonzi grew up before he went on to make his name in England with Blackburn Rovers and then Stoke, where he emerged as one of the leading midfielders in the Premier League over the course of three seasons.
