Wrexham star thinks Phil Parkinson has completed a ‘brilliant’ signing this summer.

Wrexham have added a major signing in midfield having secured the signature of free agent George Dobson earlier in July.

Phil Parkinson allowed Luke Young to leave the club this summer as his contract came to an end.

The experienced midfielder has been an outstanding servant to Wrexham over the years but has now moved on to Cheltenham Town.

Young’s departure means Wrexham needed to find another leader in the middle of the park – and Parkinson went for George Dobson.

Parkinson has previously worked with Dobson having coached him during their time together at Sunderland.

The pair have now reunited at the STōK Cae Ras and Dobson has more than one familiar face to lean on as he settles in at Wrexham.

Dobson has already admitted that he knows a few Wrexham players well from previous clubs.

The midfielder noted after completing his move that he played with Elliot Lee at Charlton Athletic and striker Ollie Palmer at AFC Wimbledon.

Those reunions will certainly help Dobson settle in but the key man may be defender Eoghan O’Connell.

Dobson and O’Connell played together at Walsall before reuniting at Charlton Athletic.

The pair know each other very well and will now join forces once again in an attempt to bring more success to Wrexham.

O’Connell has now spoken to The Leader about the move, believing that Dobson is a ‘brilliant addition’ to the Wrexham squad.

O’Connell noted that he has kept in touch with Dobson over the years and they are ‘good friends’, so reuniting once again left the defender ‘delighted’.

The Irishman feels that fans will ‘grow to love’ Dobson, branding him ‘one of the best midfielders in the league’, making him a ‘superb signing’.

“I have played with him twice because we were on loan together at Walsall in 2017 as well so I have known him years,” said O’Connell. “We have kept in touch since then and played together again at Charlton so we are good friends. When he rang me and said it looked like he was coming to Wrexham I was delighted and he will be a brilliant addition on and off the pitch.”

“The gaffer has worked with him before so he knows that and I think he is a player the fans will grow to love just from the way he is and the way he plays on the pitch. It is a superb signing, to get one of the best midfielders in the league like that is great for us so we are delighted to have him,” he added.

Wrexham benefit from Dobson contract confusion
Dobson ran down his contract at Charlton and was able to join Wrexham on a free transfer as a result.

The midfielder’s future was in some doubt for a while though as he actually signed a pre-contract agreement with Hungarian side Fehervar earlier this year.

Fehervar will be in the qualifying stage for Europa Conference League this summer, so Dobson could have played European football.

However, that agreement has been annulled with Dobson pulling out of the move due to family reasons, according to the Hungarian media.

Dobson also decided not to stay with Charlton, all of which paved the way for Wrexham to pounce and land something of a coup.

A proven League One player snapped up on a free transfer, Dobson should be key for Wrexham next season – and O’Connell clearly can’t wait to see him in action.
