Yu Darvish Woes Continue As Padres Pitcher Lands On Restricted List.
The roller-coaster career of San Diego pitcher Yu Darvish has taken a new downward dive.
Placed on the restricted list by the Padres to settle an undisclosed family matter, the veteran starter had been the mainstay of a rotation already staggering from illness and injury. Manager Mike Shildt had no prediction as to a return date.
The five-time All-Star won’t be paid while on the restricted list. Nor will he count against the club’s 40-man roster.
Darvish, 38 next month, will lose a pro-rated amount of his $16 million salary to be calculated after his return.
Darvish had not pitched since May 29, when he was placed on the injured list with a left groin strain. His return from that injury was delayed when he also suffered inflammation in his pitching elbow.
Fortunately for Darvish, the salaries of players on the IL are not suspended.
The 12-year veteran came to San Diego before the 2020 campaign after a seven-player trade with the Chicago Cubs. He posted a 2.01 earned run average in 76 innings of the virus-shortened 2020 season, finishing second in the Cy Young Award voting, but has not been the same since.
Armed with a new five-year, $90 million contract that runs through 2028, Darvish made 11 starts and posted a 3.20 ERA this year before injuries intervened.
Since joining the Padres, he has a 3.80 earned run average spanning 95 starts.
