Wrexham striker bid played down as rumours surround Paul Mullin’s backup striker from Leeds United
Wrexham have got the ball rolling with a first summer signing but links to another potential addition have been completely played down.
Fans went into the summer window with one dream Wrexham signing in mind – Arthur Okonkwo.
The giant goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Wrexham, turning in some sensational displays following Ben Foster’s departure.
Arsenal decided to let Okonkwo leave at the end of his contract this summer but many Wrexham supporters felt that he would end up elsewhere.
Wrexham managed to pull off a deal though, signing Okonkwo on a permanent basis with a three-year deal at the STōK Cae Ras.
A first summer signing since promotion took a little while to arrive but Wrexham have started the summer in perfect fashion.
The hunt for more signings is now on – but one rumour has now been shut down.
Wrexham links to Joe Ironside addressed
Wrexham already have a number of striking options but have been linked with further additions.
Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and Jack Marriott are at Phil Parkinson’s disposal whilst Steven Fletcher recently signed a new deal to stay put.
Those are four seasoned strikers and Parkinson could even call upon Sam Dalby and Jake Bickerstaff if needed.
Still, Wrexham have been linked with Northern Ireland striker Josh Magennis and Doncaster Rovers forward Joe Ironside has even been mentioned
However, the Doncaster Free Press report that rumoured interest from Wrexham is ‘wide of the mark’.
The report plays down rumours of a six-figure bid from Wrexham and highlights that Doncaster don’t want to sell Ironside with two years still left to run on his deal.
It’s also highlights that Ironside joined Doncaster last year in order to be closer to home, so a move to Wrexham may not be in his plans.
Still, if Wrexham do come knocking, it would surely be difficult for Ironside to say no at this stage in his career.
Paul Mullin may be disappointed
Ironside is actually a name Wrexham have considered in recent times.
Reports in April highlighted that Wrexham looked into signing Ironside last summer but he chose a move to Doncaster instead.
That means interest from Wrexham isn’t out of all realms of possibility, especially after an impressive season in Yorkshire.
Ironside racked up 24 goals in all competitions this past season and could have reunited with Mullin at Wrexham.
Mullin partnered Ironside in the Cambridge United attack during the 2020-21 season.
Mullin and Ironside combined for 48 goals in that campaign before Mullin chose to leave for a move to Wrexham.
Ironside noted in 2021 that he and Mullin really complemented each other well with their games meshing together perfectly.
“I just played my game and then Mulls played his, and it all married in together,” said Ironside.
Mullin may well have relished the chance to play alongside Ironside but unless the situation changes this summer, it looks like a move won’t be on the horizon.
