Lincoln City in the battle for Hull City’s top veteran defender, as reported by Skysport this afternoon
The U’s snuck into the League One play-off spots and after beating Peterborough United over two legs, they defeated Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley to book their place in the second-tier for the 2024/25 campaign.
It means an important summer transfer window lays ahead, and Des Buckingham’s side may face a battle with old foes Lincoln for one of their targets.
Writing on Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon has said that Oxford United have joined the Imps in the race for Blackpool right-back Jordan Gabriel. Lincoln City have had him lined up as a Lasse Sorensen replacement, but Buckingham could offer him a route back to the Championship.
Nixon notes that Gabriel is entering the last year of his contract, meaning he might be available on a ‘bargain’.
Gabriel has proven himself as a solid option on the right-hand side in both the Championship and League One ever since making his way through the Nottingham Forest academy.
He missed a good chunk of last season through injury and upon his return in December, the 25-year-old’s Blackpool appearances were split between starts and outings off the bench. He played 28 times overall, chipping in with four goals from wing-back for Neil Critchley.
Overall, he has managed five goals and three assists in 105 games for the Tangerines. However, it could be that he doesn’t add to that total.
As he enters the last year of his contract, it could be better for Blackpool to cash in on Gabriel now, removing the risk of losing him for nothing.
That will certainly pique the interests of Oxford United and Lincoln City, who will be tempted by a potential cut-price swoop.
While Oxford United are gearing up for Championship football, Lincoln City will be looking to build a squad capable of going one further and getting into the play-off spots next season.
The U’s have already made several additions to their ranks. Peter Kioso has signed from Rotherham United while Jamie Cumming, Will Vaulks and Jacob Knightbridge arrive on free transfers.
As for the Imps, Conor McGrandles is back on a permanent basis, joining from Charlton Athletic. Tom Bayliss and Jamie Pardington have also come through the doors at Sincil Bank.
Time will tell if Gabriel ends up joining either club as they look set to battle for his signature.
The 25-year-old has been an influential performer in the National League, mainly operating as a centre-back. He also offers his services at either right or left-back, positions where he had spent much of his career before joining the Heed.
Durham-born Richardson sees his deal end later this month and as he targets a Football League return, he has interest from all three divisions.
Championship trio Sunderland, Derby County and Oxford United are showing an interest in the Gateshead star, according to HITC. Peterborough United and Barnsley are monitoring his situation from League One, while League Two side Notts County are also keen.
