Fabrizio Romano says ‘really strong’ player has completed Aston Villa medical after deal was officially held
Aston Villa have been especially busy on the transfer front over the past week or so.
The Villans finished fourth in the Premier League last season to secure a spot in the Champions League.
With that in mind, Unai Emery’s charges will need to strengthen to ensure they can handle the additional workload.
Villa have been spinning several plates of late. They have signed Lewis Dobbin from Everton, who in turn have landed Tim Iroegbunam from the West Midlands club.
The Villans are also in talks with Juventus over a cash-plus-player deal that is set to see Douglas Luiz head to Turin, while Ian Maatsen is reportedly close to joining Villa.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the Juventus front, with one of Villa’s targets having now completed his medical at Bodymoor Heath.
Enzo Barrenechea completes Aston Villa medical
The player in question is Enzo Barrenechea, the Argentine midfielder who came into the picture after Weston McKennie dropped out of the running.
Romano has taken to X to claim that the 23-year-old has successfully completed his medical at Villa.
The Villans will announce Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior – plus Chelsea’s Maatsen – as their new players in the coming days, he added.
According to BBC Sport, Villa will receive around £18.5million in cash, plus Barrenechea and Iling-Junior, for Luiz.
Villa set to land player ‘no different from Rodri’
Barrenechea is a great shout for Villa, as he is a talented young player with his whole career ahead of him, and proved himself in Serie A last season.
The 23-year-old, who can play at No. 6 and No. 8, was at Frosinone last season, and made 36 Serie A appearances.
Former Juventus U19 coach Andrea Bonatti told Tuttomercatoweb earlier this year that Barrenechea is a “really strong” player.
“He’s no different from Rodri or (Sergio) Busquets,” he said. “He’s a playmaker and can also play as a midfielder now he is much more complete.
“He can do well in the Juve context, he has the potential for that level, but he will have to confirm what he is doing and it is not easy to repeat himself.”
