Marc Guehi has just said something very interesting about Newcastle after claim Eddie Howe wants him
Marc Guehi has just made an interesting remark about Newcastle United whilst he is away with England at the Euros.
The Crystal Palace defender was one of England’s best players as they beat Serbia 1-0 on Sunday, and looks set to continue at centre-back alongside John Stones against Denmark on Thursday. Marc Guehi will also be joined by Kieran Trippier in defence, with the Newcastle United player set to start at left-back again in the absence of Luke Shaw.
For Guehi, there was a lot of concern surrounding him heading into the tournament. There were fears that England were weak at centre-back without Harry Maguire, but Guehi silenced those fears with a great display in the Three Lions’ opener.
Marc Guehi linked with Newcastle United move
That is why he is rated so highly, and why lots of Premier League clubs are interested in signing.
One club that has been linked is Newcastle United, with the Magpies eager to sign another centre-back despite completing a deal for Lloyd Kelly.
Guehi would fit the bill for Eddie Howe, but there are worries that he would be too expensive.
What Guehi has said about St James’ Park
Despite those worries, Guehi has suddenly got Toon hearts racing after mentioning the club in an interview on England’s official Instagram account.
The 23-year-old was speaking to Josh Denzel, who was asking Guehi questions that had been submitted by fans, one of which wanted to know ‘what is the best ground you have ever played in?’. The host then gave Guehi a hand, telling him to exclude Selhrust Park, which is the home of Crystal Palace.
“I’d say in the Prem, probably Newcastle, St James’ Park,” he said.
“It’s just really, really loud in there. The fans make it really difficult when we go there so probably St James’ Park.”
Newcastle unlikely to splash out on Marc Guehi
Given rumours of interest from Newcastle, it is very exciting to hear Guehi speak so positively about St James’ Park. He loves the atmosphere in the North East, and that is something he could experience much more regularly if he signed for the Magpies.
However, a deal would come as a huge surprise, and that is a view shared by HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about the prospect of Guehi joining Newcastle United this summer.
“I don’t think Newcastle are going to spend £60million on a centre-back this summer,” he said.
“Marc Guehi is clearly someone who they like, but I can’t see them paying that much for another centre-back now that Lloyd Kelly is through the door.
“He would be perfect for a lot of teams, and Newcastle are one of them, but I do not see it happening.”
Finances will be the issue. Newcastle obviously have money to spend, but most of their budget is going to to go towards a right winger. One target is Guehi’s Palace teammate Michael Olise, who will cost around £60million.
