Atletico Madrid forward Alvaro Morata could return to Serie A for the third time this summer, with Juventus and Roma vying for his signature. After scoring in Spain’s 3-0 win against Croatia on Saturday, the 31-year-old delivered a cryptic update on growing speculation surrounding his future.
Asked point blank by a Corriere dello Sport correspondent in Berlin whether he’ll return to Italy this summer, Morata replied: “What? Surely on holiday.”
Morata threw his Atletico Madrid future into doubt earlier this week, admitting he’s no longer happy with his life at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. His words have put Juventus and Roma on red alert, with both teams willing to offer him a route back to Serie A.
The Spaniard’s contract runs out in 2026. However, he’s keen to cut short his four-year association with Los Colchoneros immediately after Euro 2024. Juventus are intimately familiar with Morata’s qualities.
He was part of the golden generation between 2014-16 before returning to the club on a two-season loan between 2020-22. Juventus would give him a third chance, but only if they sell Arkadiusz Milik or Moise Kean.
While Juventus must sell before buying, Roma could take a more proactive approach after escorting Romelu Lukaku back to Chelsea. Daniele De Rossi needs a new center-forward, and Morata ranks high on his shortlist.
Morata will face his former Juventus teammate Federico Chiesa when Spain and Italy lock horns in the second Group B match in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday, June 20. But as the latter seems to be on his way out, they wouldn’t share the dressing room even if the ex-Real Madrid man returns to Turin.
Rome based media outlet II Messaggero have suggested that Spurs are interested in AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham.
Abraham, 26, is coming off the back of an unfortunate ACL injury, sustained during Roma’s final game of the 22/23 season against Spezia.
As a result, the Englishman only played in 320 minutes of last season, scoring one goal away at Napoli (Transfermarkt).
This certainly adds risk to any possible signing, although you would think a full pre-season would do him the world of good as he looks to get back to his best.
Abraham served up a modest return of 8 goals in the 22/23 Serie A campaign, but did score 17 in his debut season the year before, as well as 9 goals in the Conference League as he fired AS Roma to the trophy in the competition’s inaugural season.
His best top-flight season to date, as far as minutes per goal are concerned, was the 19/20 Premier League season with Chelsea. The striker scored 15 goals, all from open play, in just 25 starts, scoring every 148 minutes (SofaScore).
The same publication are reporting that the Rome club are open to selling Abraham for €25m (around £21.1m), and that London rivals West Ham are also interested.
