One of the most heated rivalries in all of college football is the annual battle for the Golden Egg. No matter how good either team is in whatever particular year, it’s usually a tight game and could really go either way…like most storied rivalries.
In this year’s upcoming edition of the battle for the Egg Bowl trophy, both the Rebels and Bulldogs are on two very different sides of the fence. Ole Miss will enter the 2024 season with the expectation of at least qualifying for the College Football Playoffs, while Mississippi State is hoping to show a glimpse of promise in year one with former Ole Miss OC Jeff Lebby now pulling the strings.
Though we’re five months away from Ole Miss attempting to keep the Egg in Oxford, CircaSports released their early spread for the game and they’re favoring Lane Kiffin’s Rebels by a whopping 19 points. It’s the first spread that’s been released in regard to the 2024 Egg Bowl.
The last time the Egg Bowl was in Oxford, the Rebels were favored (-2.5), but ended up losing a heartbreaker after Jaxson Dart led the offense down the field late in the game.
However, this year’s Egg Bowl tradition will have a new look. After playing on Thanksgiving for the last seven seasons, the 2024 matchup in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium will be played on Black Friday (Nov. 29). Kickoff – usually a night-time matchup on ESPN – is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
Like other sportsbooks have already released, Cira also included their opening spread for Ole Miss’ games against Oklahoma and Georgia. The Rebels are five-point favorites over Oklahoma at home, while they’re listed as seven-point underdogs for their matchup against the Bulldogs.
Ole Miss will kickoff its 2024 campaign at home against Furman on Saturday Aug. 31. Streaming will be available for the game on SECN+/ESPN+ at 6 p.m. CT.
