In-state legacy recruit Mal Waldrep commits to Alabama over Clemson, others

An official visit and two days later, the three-star offensive lineman is following in his father’s footsteps in Tuscaloosa

The blistering hot start to the summer official visitors season rolls on for Kalen DeBoer and the rest of the Alabama coaching staff.

Mal Waldrep has committed to the Crimson Tide over Clemson, Florida and Tennessee. The decision comes two days after his official visit to The Capstone and earlier than originally expected.

The three-star offensive lineman previously confirmed a July 10 commitment date, but felt good enough to make a decision roughly a month ahead of schedule. He took an official visit to Clemson last weekend and had Florida and Tennessee trips on the schedule to close out the month.

The Phenix City (AL) prospect grew up an Alabama fan while going to games and camps as a kid. His father, Mal Waldrep, played for the Crimson Tide from 1998-2002. The dream was to play for Nick Saban, but Waldrep couldn’t have asked for a better staff for the new era.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder had a conversation with Chris Kapilovic in April and put the Crimson Tide back in his top four soon after.

“I think he means business and I think he really knows what he is doing with offensive line coaching,” Waldrep previously told Bama247. “He’s been to a lot of places and done it the right way from what I have seen.”

Waldrep is also high on DeBoer, and believes he is the right man for the job.  “His numbers, stats don’t lie. He took (Washington) to the national championship, so he’s obviously a good coach and knows what he is doing.”

“I mean Alabama is still Alabama,” Waldrep has previously said as well. “Even though the Saban dynasty is over, at the end of the day Alabama is still Alabama to me and that’s just how I see it.”

Waldrep is the No. 498 prospect, No. 40 offensive tackle and No. 21 player in Alabama, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He checks in as the No. 42 offensive tackle and No. 23 player in Alabama, per 247Sports.

The Crimson Tide picked two commitments coming out of the first official visitors weekend with a flip of four-star Duncanville (TX) quarterback Keelon Russell from SMU and Mater Dei (Calif.) cornerback Chuck McDonald. The second weekend has also resulted in two commitments (so far) with Waldrep joining four-star offensive lineman Michael Carroll, who became the first offensive line commit on Monday. Alabama’s 2025 class ranks No.
