Report: Dolphins signing former Saints safety Marcus Maye

The Miami Dolphins are signing veteran safety Marcus Maye, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Monday.

Terms of the agreement have yet to be disclosed.

“Maye had multiple teams interested but loves the roster in Miami and wants to be part of a Super Bowl contender — which he believes Miami has,” Schultz wrote on X.

Maye, 31, spent the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints after signing a three-year, $28.5 million contract with the team during the 2022 free agency period. He appeared in 17 games, tallying 97 tackles (69 solo), two interceptions, one sack, one forced fumble and four passes defended. The NFL suspended Maye for the first three games of the 2023 campaign for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He also spent time on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Marcus Maye finds new home in Miami

New Orleans released him with one year remaining on his deal as part of cost cutting measures. Maye was set to count $9.6 million against the salary cap and earn $7 million in base salary this year. New Orleans saved $1.1 million by cutting him.

Prior to joining the Saints, Maye spent the first five seasons of his career with the New York Jets. New York selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Florida. Maye made 60 starts for the Jets. He recorded 312 tackles (219 solo), six interceptions, 3.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and 24 passes defended. He tore his Achilles in Week 9 of the 2021 season which would end up being his last appearance for New York.

Maye will likely compete for a backup role in Miami, with the team already having its starting safeties in place. The Dolphins signed veteran Jordan Poyer earlier this offseason, who is expected to start alongside Jevon Holland.
