Surprise identity revealed of key player in bringing Tim Walter to Hull City.

The Tigers’ new head coach will officially take over on July 1.

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has revealed how Inter Milan star Hakan Çalhanoğlu played a key role in bringing Tim Walter to the MKM Stadium.

Walter was appointed as the Tigers’ new coach just over a week ago with the German chief meeting the media for the first time on Tuesday before officially beginning work on July 1 when the players return for pre-season training.

The former Hamburg head coach was the number one target from the moment Rosenior was given his marching orders after the Championship campaign ended, and City missed out on the Championship’s top six.

While other managers were spoken to and numerous bosses declared their interest in replacing Rosenior, Walter was the number one target from day one and will be charged with bettering the seventh-placed finish the Tigers achieved in the campaign just gone.

Çalhanoğlu, the 45m euro-rated Turkish international midfielder was born in Germany and played for Hamburg prior to Walter’s arrival at the Volksparkstadion, but told Ilicali how much of an influence he was having watched his sides closely when Walter was a coach at Bayern Munich’s academy.

“I really believe in him (Walter),” Ilicali said. “The first person who talked about him to me and then we started (the process was Hakan). We started checking around him, we were doing our investigations. You know what’s going on, how is he and everything. The first one is Hakan Çalhanoğlu, he’s a very good friend of mine, and he said in the beginning of his career, Tim was one of the biggest reasons for his development in football.
