Colts QB Anthony Richardson explains why he was throwing left-handed.
The Indianapolis Colts are treading lightly with second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson’s shoulder recovery.
Which is exactly why the 22-year-old QB was only allowed to throw left-handed during drills at minicamp on Thursday, one day after dealing with some soreness in his surgically repaired throwing shoulder.
Richardson was held out of the practice portion of Thursday’s minicamp as a precautionary measure.
“I’m good, just a little soreness,” Richardson said, via ESPN’s Stephen Holder. “I’ve been dealing with soreness since I started throwing, it’s just my shoulder. But it’s hard to listen to the trainers sometimes they’re like, ‘No, you’ve got to sit out for a day.’ I don’t want to sit out, but it’s part of the health journey.”
Richardson tore the AC joint in his right shoulder in Week 4 of last season against the Tennessee Titans. He had surgery on Oct. 24 to repair the damage, and he’s been slowly adding more and more to his plate as he works his way back to full strength.
The 2023 No. 4 overall pick acknowledged that he may have pushed himself a little too hard during Wednesday’s practice, resulting in the soreness he felt Thursday morning. Richardson resumed throwing a few months ago, and he’s had to dial it back a few times before.
“We’re actually surprised it’s only been one day like this,” Richardson added. “Everything has been smooth sailing so far. … Nothing to worry about. I’ve dealt with this before. Normally, I’d just ice up and go back out there at it again, but they’re saying there’s no need to rush out there for the last day (of minicamp) when we’ve got the season coming up.”
Richardson ended his rookie season with 577 yards passing, 136 yards rushing, seven total touchdowns and one interception.
