ALLEN PARK — Logan Thomas, the former quarterback turned tight end, is finalizing a deal with the San Francisco 49ers, per NFL Network.

Thomas spent one season with the Detroit Lions, catching 16 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown, all representing career highs from early in his position switch to tight end. His career as a pass-catcher hit new heights during his four seasons with the Washington Commanders. Thomas had 72 catches for 670 yards and six scores in 2020, then bounced back with 55 receptions for 496 yards and four scores this past campaign after two down years. Shocker! Thomas’ signing with the 49ers returns him to the NFC West, where he started his career as a quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals a decade ago. The 6-foot-6, 250-pounder was a fourth-round pick out of Virginia Tech. He appeared in two games as a rookie, going one-for-nine for 81 yards and one touchdown while getting sacked twice. Since switching to tight end, he’s hit his only two pass attempts, combining for 43 yards.

The 49ers tried to swipe tight end Brock Wright from Detroit in restricted free agency. But the Lions matched the three-year, $12 million deal at the deadline, much to Wright’s relief. Wright adds a physical, sneaky element to the tight end position around these parts, with Sam LaPorta looking to hit another level after a historic breakout season. The Lions also have James Mitchell and the returning Shane Zylstra in the mix, with Parker Hesse and Sean McKeon fighting for roster spots.
