Yankees Rivalry Roundup: Rays spoil potential Orioles sweep with late rally.
Recapping how the Yankees’ top AL opponents fared on June 2nd.
“Can’t win ‘em all,” I might have muttered.
“It’s the end of a West Coast trip and they’re tired,” I might have reasoned.
The Yankees rendered these thoughts moot with a shocking ninth-inning rally off normally reliable Giants closer Camilo Doval. Just like that, they plated four to take a 7-5 lead and Clay Holmes dusted San Francisco away to secure the sweep. The Yanks are 42-19 and can relax on an offday today now that they’re home from a 7-2 West Coast trip. What a showing!
Here’s what else was afoot among the American League’s best on Sunday.

Tampa Bay Rays (29-31) 4, Baltimore Orioles (37-20) 3
The Yankees have been putting pressure on the young O’s of late win to keep pace in the AL East, and they’ve quietly crushed it. Baltimore entered play with eight wins in their last nine games, and thanks to victories on Friday and Saturday, they were eyeing a sweep of the Rays.
For most of the ballgame, it looked like the O’s would indeed polish off that sweep. Cole Irvin was efficient in 6.1 innings of two-run ball, allowing a homer to José Caballero in the seventh but otherwise doing a nice job of stranding runners. On the other side, Gunnar Henderson the Orioles’ first pitch of the game from Zack Littell over the fence for his 19th dinger of 2024, trailing only Aaron Judge (though still tied with Kyle Tucker).
Baltimore added runs in the third and the fourth, though they lost one of their hitters to an awkward injury when Cedric Mullins accidentally bonked Jorge Mateo on the helmet with his bat. The former Baby Bomber had to exit in concussion protocol.
Caballero’s dinger had trimmed the lead to one, so after a fly out, Orioles skipper Brandon Hyde hooked Irvin in favor of Dillon Tate, who got out of the seventh. He wasn’t so fortunate in the eighth. Isaac Paredes and Amed Rosario led off with consecutive singles, and even though Jose Siri squared to bunt, Tate struggling with his control. Siri’s missed attempt on 2-0 was his only strike. With the count now 3-1, Siri swung away and it paid off for Tampa Bay.
