Scouting Jets UDFA safety Jarius Monroe
With the 2024 NFL draft behind us, we’ve just finished taking an in-depth look at each of the Jets’ draft picks. Now that we’ve completed that process, we’ve moved on to look at each of their undrafted free agent signings, continuing today with former Tulane defensive back Jarius Monroe.
The 23-year old Monroe is listed at 6’2” and 205 pounds. He was a two-time all-AAC first team selection after having transferred from Nicholls State. He intercepted six passes and broke up 18 passes in two seasons with the Green Wave.
Backgroun
Monroe was a three-star high school recruit who originally enrolled at Nicholls State. In three seasons with the Colonels, he started 32 games and recorded 109 tackles and an interception. After breaking up 10 passes in his junior year in 2021, Monroe was named as a first team all-Southland conference selection and opted to enter the transfer portal to play against better competition.
He started off in a reserve role at Tulane, but he worked his way into the starting line-up by the middle of his first season and ended up as a first team all-AAC selection as he racked up 49 tackles, three interceptions and eight pass breakups.
In 2023, Monroe started every game apart from the team’s bowl game, which he opted out of. He was again named as a first-team all-AAC selection as he posted 48 tackles, three interceptions and 10 pass breakups.
Despite being a combine snub, Monroe turned heads during the pre-draft process when he was named as the practice player of the week at the East-West Shrine Bowl and then won the defensive MVP award in the game itself, as he intercepted one pass and broke up another.
A disappointing pro day workout made it likely he wasn’t going to be drafted, but the Jets signed Monroe to an undrafted free agent contract with $125K in guarantees.
Now let’s take a look at what Monroe brings to the table, divided into categories.
Measurables/Athleticism
Monroe has nice size and length and displays decent play strength, but he is not a particularly good athlete and his pro day numbers essentially ensured that NFL teams would not be looking at him as a cornerback.
He ran 4.68 in the 40-yard dash and had a 33-inch vertical, disappointing agility numbers and only nine bench press reps. These numbers would be poor for a cornerback and are still below average for a safety.
