Leicester walking down the path of Pep Guardiola to reach crossroads of Marcelo Bielsa in next manager appointment.
Carlos Corberan, currently with West Bromwich, has a very intereting path into professional football management, being at Leeds with Marcelo Bielsa.
So if Leicester decides to push for Corberan (41), they will get one special man. A bag full of gold of football knowledge and having a mastermind as his boss.
In an interview with Coiches Voice, Carlos Corberan explains his desire and approach to the game. He has gone the route from the age of 23, studying the game from a coach and manager’s point of view, leaving his attention from being a young goalkeeper to gone the route to the top from learning the trade thoroughly.
Carlos Corberan started it all at Villareal, working as a fitness coach for the b and c team. He was then moved up to do the same job for the first team. In February 2012, Corberán signed for Saudi Arabian team Al-Ittihad alongside head coach Raúl Caneda, having been recommended by Pep Guardiola. Whilst at the club, he was a fitness coach and helped get the club to the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League.
On 21 June 2017, Corberán was announced as the new Leeds United under-23 manager, replacing the departed Jason Blunt. After the appointment of new head coach Marcelo Bielsa in June 2018, Corberán was promoted to first team coach, as well as continuing his role as the head coach of the Under 23s. In October 2018, Corberán was described as “very talented” by Bielsa, with Bielsa stating he values Corberán’s opinion “more than his own”.
Corberán’s side won the PDL Northern League 2018–19 season by winning the league, they then became the national Professional Development League Champions by beating Birmingham City in the final. In June 2019, it was reported that Corberán would be offered the head coach job at Spanish side Cultural Leonesa, but he decided to stay at Leeds to remain under Bielsa. A year later, Leeds earned promotion to the Premier League as EFL Championship winners.
He has later been in charge of Huddersfield and Olympiacos, before moving to West Bromwich, being at The Hawthorns since October 2022, last season ending in 9th position, moving into the play-off’s in this one, losing that first round vs. Southampton, but still improving the team at The Hawthorns. He is said to be a good tactition and part of the band of people not reaching their manager positions by being a top footballer in the past, but by being in these environments in some other capacities from an early age.
At this point Carlos Corberan is the favourite to take over the job from Enzo Maresca, looking at his past, it’s a similar route, but with Marcelo Bielsa as boss and not Pep Guardiola.
