Washington Nationals v Texas Rangers

The Rangers have a couple of players return from the injured list and lose someone to the injured list.

The Texas Ranger have activated pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and outfielder Wyatt Langford from the injured list, it was announced today. Evan Carter is going on the 10 day injured list with lower back tightness and Yerry Rodriguez has been optioned to AAA Round Rock.

Eovaldi’s return seemed imminent, and I thought he might start on Sunday, though the Rangers instead went with Gerson Garabito in his major league debut. Instead, he’s starting against the Diamondbacks tonight. It was up in the air as to whether Eovaldi would make a rehab appearance or not, and it appears “not” won out. Eovaldi last appeared on May 2 against the Washington Nationals, and I imagine he’ll be limited to 70-75 pitches tonight.

There were several pitchers one could pick from to drop to make room for Eovaldi. Rodriguez, who has a 6.88 ERA in 17 innings over 12 appearances this season with a 7.66 FIP, is the one who drew the black bean.

The Rangers are also swapping out rookie outfielders, with Wyatt Langford being activated and Evan Carter going on the injured list. Langford last played on May 4, and has struggled so far in his rookie campaign, slashing .224/.295/.293. Hopefully the time off has allowed him to re-set and get things going again.

And hopefully the time off for Evan Carter will benefit him, as well. Carter is 2 for his last 38 with 14 Ks against just two walks and no extra base hits. He missed time a couple of weeks ago due to back issues, and it appears the Rangers want to give him a break and get back to 100% now that Langford is ready. I don’t know that Carter will be out for a significant amount of time, but I do suspect that he’ll spend several games on a rehab stint before he returns.
