Tigers lineup: Matt Vierling starting at third base.
DETROIT — Matt Vierling, who hit a three-run walk-off home run on Sunday afternoon, will start at third base and bat fifth on Tuesday night.
The Detroit Tigers (26-27) and Pittsburgh Pirates (25-29) play at 6:40 p.m. at Comerica Park
Catcher Carson Kelly; and infielders Gio Urshela, Andy Ibanez and Zach McKinstry are available off the bench.
Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal (6-1, 2.25 ERA) will face Bucs right-hander Jared Jones (3-4, 3.05).
Skubal allowed four runs on six hits in five innings in his last start on May 22 in Kansas City.
Jones is a 22-year-old rookie who doesn’t get as much attention as Paul Skenes (who the Tigers will see on Wednesday), but he’s been very good.
A second-round draft pick in 2020, Jones has struck out 68 and walked 10 over 59 innings (10 starts) in his debut season.
Unlike Skenes, who was a household name in college, Jones was only rated the Pirates’ 11th-best prospect a year ago. His dramatic impact at such a young age has come as a pleasant surprise for Pittsburgh.
