Texas Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford will begin a rehab assignment with the Round Rock Express tonight, the team announced today.

Langford has been on the injured list since straining his hamstring on May 4 in a game in Kansas City. He has reportedly been hitting and running the bases at the Rangers’ complex at Surprise, and the thought is that he could be activated after the Rangers’ off day on Tuesday.

Langford, the #4 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, was one of the favorites for the Rookie of the Year Award coming into the 2024 season, but has had a rough start to his major league career. Langford is slashing .224/.295/.293 in 129 plate appearances over 31 games so far.

The most likely candidate to be dropped from the active roster once Langford returns — assuming he does go back on the active roster once he is activated from the injured list, and isn’t optioned to the minors — would be Derek Hill. Hill was brought up from the minors in place of Davis Wendzel earlier this season. The 28 year old, who was signed to a minor league deal as a free agent this offseason, is out of options, and thus would have to clear waivers to be sent back to the minors.
