Luke Young and Ben Tozer captained Wrexham but been released.

PHIL PARKINSON is keeping his cards close to his chest when it comes to who will be the next Wrexham captain.

Wrexham have clinched back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club’s history and will compete in League One when the 2024-25 campaign kicks-off in August.

They will do so without first-team captain Luke Young and Ben Tozer, the club captain, who were both released earlier this month after the Reds finished runners-up in League Two.

Midfielder Young, the longest serving player in the squad, previously helped Wrexham win the National League title following a record-breaking 2022-23 season when centre-back Tozer played every single minute of every game.

But the duo found themselves in and out of the team this term meaning star striker Paul Mullin, who finished leading scorer with 26 goals in all competitions, or utility player James McClean donned the captain’s armband.

Both Mullin and McClean would be obvious contenders to take over as skipper but Parkinson was keeping tight-lipped over his choice to lead the team out.

“Luke and Ben were both very good captains for us over the last few years,” said the Reds’ boss.

“They move on to the next challenge in their careers and we will make a decision on the new captain.

“Obviously Mulls has had the armband and James McClean has wore the armband as well.

“I feel we have got some good leadership qualities in the group and that is important in any season.

“Eoghan O’Connell has captained the team before so there is plenty of leadership potential which is great from our point of view.”

Parkinson is looking to strengthen the squad ahead of Wrexham’s first season in the third tier since 2004-05 and a new signing could be unveiled as captain.
