This former Pro Bowler thinks Blake Corum being a shorter RB is good for the Rams.
Maurice Jones-Drew explained on “Between the Horns” why he believes Corum’s lack of height is actually an advantage.
The Los Angeles Rams new rookie running back Blake Corum is considered to be on the shorter side of players when it comes to the NFL. At only 5’8’’, some would view his smaller stature as a disadvantage when competing against some of the massive defensive lineman that he will inevitably encounter during his career. One of those people, however, is not former Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who believes that Corum’s lack of height could actually be an advantage for LA.
MJD spoke on his experience as a former short running back in the NFL during the Rams podcast/YouTube show Between The Horns. He explained how he believes Corum could get lost behind the Rams oversized offensive line, making it hard for defenders to find him.
When asked about the Rams third round selection, MJD said:
“First and foremost, I’m very excited for the short running back, the short running back is back. I love what the Rams are doing because when I played in Jacksonville, especially when I became the guy, they went huge on the offensive line. All that to say is, those double teams, you can’t see me.” Jones-Drew continued “When you put him in this situation, in this system, imagine the Dotson, Avila and Jackson double-teams, or Havenstein. All these guys, the big linemen, can you see him? No.”
Jones-Drew also touched on why he believed Corum landed with a great fit in Los Angeles:
“We know the Rams want to run downhill, so when you look at Blake Corum, I had him as my third or fourth ranked back, one because I felt like he was the most pro ready guy to go right now. He
understands protections, he’s smart, he’s physical, he runs downhill, and the reason he was third is because not many teams are downhill runners anymore, a lot of teams are going to that spread, side to side, kind of single back deal, but I knew there were a couple good fits for him, obviously the Chargers would have been a good fit with his old coach, and what the Rams are doing here was going to be a good fit”
