Scouting Jets rookie tackle Olu Fashanu
Taking a look at the Jets first round pick.
With the 2024 NFL draft behind us, we’ve been taking an in-depth look at each of the Jets’ draft picks, in reverse order. We wrap up today with former Penn State tackle Olu Fashanu, who was selected by the Jets with the 11th pick of the first round.
The 21-year old Fashanu is listed at 6’6” and 312 pounds. He was a consensus All American and first team All-Big Ten selection in 2023. He didn’t give up a sack in a college career that saw him starting 21 games.
Fashanu was a three-star high school recruit. He enrolled at Penn State, where he didn’t see action in his first season in 2020. He mostly just played special teams in his second season, with just 21 offensive snaps in the regular season. However, he started the bowl game for the Nittany Lions.
In 2022, he moved into the starting line-up at left tackle and started the first eight games before missing the rest of the year due to an injury. He was named as a second team All-Big Ten selection, and many analysts were surprised that he didn’t enter the NFL draft at that point.
2023 saw him starting 12 games and earning consensus All American and first team All-Big Ten honors. He was also awarded the Rimington-Pace trophy as the Big Ten offensive lineman of the year.
Fashanu announced he would be entering the 2024 draft and was regarded as a potential top-10 pick throughout the pre-draft process despite suffering an injury during his combine workout.
The Jets eventually picked him 11th, having moved back one spot in a trade down.
Now let’s take a look at what Fashanu brings to the table, divided into categories.
Measurables/Athleticism
Fashanu is tall with a frame that is solid, but he could potentially add some more mass, although he already showcases excellent strength on film.
Interestingly, Fashanu is exactly the same size as D’Brickashaw Ferguson, a player he has been compared with by some analysts. Ferguson had issues keeping weight on during his first few seasons, but this seems less likely to be an issue for Fashanu.
At the combine, Fashanu posted good speed and explosiveness numbers before getting hurt, including a 5.11 in the 40-yard dash.
Interestingly, Fashanu has extremely small hands by NFL offensive lineman standards – the smallest for an offensive tackle in combine history, in fact. However, he is ambidextrous and has excellent grip strength, so this doesn’t appear to affect him.
Other than one snap at tight end and one in the slot out of a gadget formation, Fashanu only played the left tackle position in college. However, he spent the offseason preparing in case he needs to take reps on the right side and has said he would be open to playing inside if asked to.
Pass Blocking
The most exciting thing about Fashanu is his pass protection numbers from Penn State. He didn’t give up a sack, and only gave up one quarterback hit. Even his pressure rate was low, as he allowed less than one per game on average.
He had only two games where he gave up multiple pressures; in 2022 against Central Michigan and last season against Ohio State. Apart from these two games, he allowed just seven pressures in his other 19 starts, which included plenty of good teams with NFL talent.
Fashanu looks to be in control the majority of the time in his game film, as he’s quick to drop into his stance, moves his feet well to mirror and uses his length and strength to control his man
